How can you clean a hundred old cemetery stones in a single day?
Teenagers!
Waterford Town Clerk Deb Benoit reported with joy that the town's Cemetery Committee hosted about 42 students from St. Johnsbury Academy on May 1, for "Sophomore Stewardship Day" at the Lower Waterford Cemetery.
With coaching from DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) leaders Nola Forbes and Deb Ball, and Cemetery Committee members Mark Harpin, Lyn Fleming, and Deb Benoit, the crew tenderly scrubbed clean the markers that mean so much to Waterford's history and residents.
On the stones, simple water and "elbow grease" gave the students a chance to read a LOT more, and they were impressed to see the stories come to life.
